What Are Dental Crowns?
While you might have heard the term dental crowns, you might not know what it is exactly. Dental crowns are artificial caps which can be made of porcelain, metal, porcelain fused over metal or zirconia, designed to mimic the shape and colour of your teeth. We place them over a damaged tooth, over teeth with very large fillings, or on a dental implant in the case of a missing tooth. In the case of a weakened tooth, a dental crown will protect your natural tooth against further damages without impeding its natural function.
When Do You Require a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are versatile in the sense that they are beneficial in a variety of circumstances. Some reasons why we recommend dental crowns are:
-
To prevent an already weak tooth from breaking and then possibly requiring extraction.
-
To restore a cracked or broken tooth.
-
To guard a tooth that has had a large filling.
-
To cover misshapen teeth.
-
And more!

Types of Dental Crown
At Galleria Dental Centre, we provide various types of dental crowns in London. Different types of crowns are beneficial in different situations; our doctor will recommend the one that works for you.
-
In-Lays and on-lays: If your tooth doesn't have extensive damage, a restoration such as an in-lay and on-lay, which are like a partial crown, can be an option.
-
Full crowns: Full crowns are ideal for situations where the tooth needs to be restored completely.
We craft each dental crown to meet the unique requirements of our patients.
Process
At Galleria Dental Centre, we follow a straightforward process when providing you with your dental crown.
-
First consultation: We carefully inspect the extent of the damage, the health of your teeth, your lifestyle and your budget. Our team discusses your concerns and requirements.
-
Preparation: Every tooth that gets a crown needs to be cut down/trimmed to make room for the thickness of the crown that goes on top of it. After this is done, an impression or mould is taken of it to send to the laboratory where the crown is made. We will then make a little temporary crown for you to wear on your tooth until the permanent crown is made.
-
Fitting: Once the dental crown is ready, we fit it over your tooth. Sometimes a new impression/mould may be required at this point to have alterations done to the crown to get your crown just right so it feels just like your natural tooth. Our dentist or hygienists can provide you with the information you need to take care of your crowns.
If you have questions about our dental crowns or would like to know more about the procedure, please call us.
If you have a small area with decay on your tooth, a filling is an ideal solution. However, a simple filling doesn't work for teeth that have large areas of damage and are severely weakened. In these scenarios, a dental crown is a suitable solution. Additionally, you might require a dental crown if your tooth has had a large number of fillings.
It is best to take your dentist's advice. We carefully examine your teeth to determine your options and the best course of action for you.
