Bringing Back Your Bite: Options for Missing Teeth Beyond Extraction

Dentist curing a female patient

If you have recently gone through a tooth extraction procedure, or have lost some teeth in any other way, you may be wondering what the next course of action might be to recover both your bite and your smile.

Here at Galleria Dental Centre, we understand that the thought of undergoing further dental procedures following a tooth extraction might be daunting. However, as our London-based dentist can confirm, replacing missing teeth will not only help you regain your smile, but can also improve your ability to chew food, articulate, and talk.

The Importance of Replacing Missing Teeth Following a Tooth Extraction

Here are some reasons why it is important to replace lost teeth:

  • It protects the jaw bone against atrophy.

  • It can help prevent further tooth loss.

  • It improves your ability to chew food.

  • It helps you articulate and speak properly.

  • It helps restore your smile, as well as boost your self-confidence.

Restoring Your Bite and Your Smile After a Tooth Extraction

Here are the three methods that our dentist recommends:

  • Implants  Implants are slightly costlier than other methods and installing them requires several visits to the dentist, which usually take place over the course of several months. If implants nevertheless remain a lot of patients’ favourite tooth restoration method though, it is due to their high durability, as well as their natural-looking texture. Indeed, implants are designed to mimic the look and texture of natural teeth very closely. You can brush and floss around them as you would your other teeth. Another advantage of implants is that they are installed directly into the patient’s jaw, thus replacing missing tooth roots, and protecting the jaw from potential deterioration.

  • Dentures – Dentures come in custom-made sets designed to replace multiple teeth at once and are therefore a more affordable alternative to implants. They are also a lot easier quicker and cheaper to have made. They consist of sets of artificial teeth that are placed in acrylic that fits your gums and adjacent teeth. This does mean that patients need to remove them and carefully clean them every night. The main drawback of dentures is that they are not a permanent solution, and patients will eventually need to have their set replaced by their dentist. As the bone in the areas of the missing teeth remodels the dentures can become loose with time requiring the dentures to need to be relined.

  • Bridges and Crowns Bridges and crowns are a convenient middle ground between implants and denture sets. They can be used to replace one or two adjacent teeth at once. This is why they are sometimes also referred to as fixed partial dentures. Crowns are commonly installed on the teeth adjacent to the missing teeth. However, if the patient’s natural teeth are neither strong nor healthy enough to bear crowns, they can also be installed on top of dental implants. These crowns are affixed to a patient’s teeth with the artificial teeth attached to the crowns.
