Demystifying Dental Crowns: What to Expect and When You Need Them

dental surgery

Scheduling routine dental appointments is key to improving your overall oral health. Around 65% of Canadians have visited the dentist in the past year. Going to the dentist can help prevent major dental issues from arising.

There are many ways your teeth can get damaged or start to decay. Dental crowns are a great way for your dentist to restore your teeth and smile. This blog will discuss what to expect from dental crowns and when you might need one.

What Are Dental Crowns?

Another term for a dental crown is a dental cap. Dental crowns are mostly used to strengthen and protect damaged teeth better than just a dental filling.

Crowns are artificial caps that cover affected teeth. The capped tooth looks and functions just as normal teeth do.

Your dentist will need to remove some of the tooth's enamel, so the cap fits properly over the top of the entire tooth. Your family dentist can craft a dental crown from various materials, including:

  • Porcelain

  • Metal

  • Zironia

The type of crown your dentist will recommend depends on your oral health needs and preferences.

Why Would I Need a Dental Crown?

Several scenarios might require you to get a dental crown. These can include:

  • Supporting and protecting a cracked tooth

  • Protecting a weak tooth

  • Covering a dental implant

  • Covering a discoloured or stained tooth

  • Restoring a broken or worn-down tooth

Your dentist will bring up if they believe you can benefit from getting a crown during your dental visit. They'll explain why this treatment is the best course of action to remedy your problems.

How Does the Dental Crown Procedure Work?

Most dental crown procedures consist of two appointments. Two appointments are key to ensuring the health of your teeth.

First Appointment

A few things will occur during your first appointment for your dental crown. This can include:

  • Dental impressions or intra oral scans as an alternative to impressions

  • Preparing your tooth

  • Temporary crown placement

As we mentioned earlier, your dentist will have to remove some of your tooth's enamel to ensure they get a proper fit for your crown. They might use other materials to build up parts of the tooth to create a foundation for the crown.

Dental impressions or intra oral scans are important to creating a physical representation of what your teeth look like. These impressions or scans get sent to a lab that uses them to create your crown. This process can take a few weeks, so your dentist will place a temporary crown on your tooth until then.

Second Appointment

Your dentist will place a permanent crown during your follow-up appointment. They'll ensure that the fit, colour, and shape of your crown are perfect. The dentist will use dental cement to bond the crown to your tooth.
